Calisthenics is a great way to do this. But what is calisthenics?
Calisthenics is a type of exercise where your body-weight is used as resistance. It aims to improve strength, flexibility, endurance, and coordination. It involves using a variety of movements such as pushing, pulling, bending, jumping, and swinging, often without the use of any gym equipment. Classic exercises in calisthenics include press-ups, pull-ups, squats, and dips. These exercises can be tailored to different fitness levels, making them accessible for beginners while still challenging for advanced athletes. Calisthenics promotes functional fitness by enhancing the body’s ability to perform natural movements efficiently.
Calisthenics can help you bust out of plateaus and seriously alter your physique, together with keeping you super motivated to stick to your training and help you strive to be your best.
Once you've mastered the basics it is time to move on to the more advanced type of calisthenics (Calisthenics strength skill training).
CALISTHENICS STRENGTH SKILL TRAINING
Calisthenics strength skill training focuses on developing advanced bodyweight skills that require a combination of strength, balance, and technique. This type of training involves progressive exercises aimed at achieving challenging movements such as the muscle-up, handstand push-up, front lever, and planche. Unlike traditional strength training that often isolates specific muscle groups, calisthenics strength skill training requires the integration of multiple muscle groups working in harmony. This approach not only builds significant strength but also improves neuromuscular coordination, control, and overall body awareness. Practitioners typically follow a structured progression, starting with foundational exercises and gradually advancing to more complex skills as their strength and proficiency increase.
Embarking on calisthenics training (especially calisthenics strength skills) can be daunting and if you don’t have a structured plan it is easy to become disillusioned when you see little progress.
Following a professionally designed plan, however, is the quickest way to achieve calisthenics mastery, and also look like a badass!
The video below is of me doing a Front Lever, which is a Calisthenics strength skill taken from gymnastics. It requires a huge amount of upper back strength along with a very strong core. I was not able to unlock this skill overnight. It was a long time in the making. I followed a very strict detailed plan that required me to hit various progressions along the way. This meant I was able to gain the required strength to perform the front lever and it kept me motivated by hitting various landmarks during my training journey.
